Studies Show That Chinese Healing Herbs Can Be Used For Treating Eczema

Should you suffer from the pains of eczema, you know all too well the misery that it can cause. However, a remedy may have been found in the shape of Chinese healing herbs.

Recent studies, presented at the yearly meeting of the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology, propose that orthodox Chinese herbal treatments might be of assistance in treating both children and adults.

In an effort to evaluate patient worries about whether such an approach works, and is safe, medical researcher Julia Wisniewski, MD, of Mount Sinai Hospital in New York studied 14 young people who had persistent eczema and underwent treatment with traditional Chinese medicine between August 2006 and May 2008.

All of them drank Erka Shizheng Herbal Tea two times daily, took a herbal bath for at least 20 minutes, and rubbed herbal cream on their skin several times a day. They also had acupuncture treatments.

At the start of the research period, more than half had severe symptoms; 8 months later, most were suffering from just mild symptoms. Participants also needed less medication, such as antibiotics and steriods, after just a few months of being treated.

The herbal treatments were safe, and caused no unnatural functioning of the liver or kidneys.

When it comes to eczema in adults, a group of Japanese researchers found that grown ups can also benefit from Chinese medicine. Their work involved 274 adults who had dealt with eczema for around 12 years on average. About a third had symptoms that could be classified as severe or very severe.

After 12-16 weeks of being treated with herbal remedies which had been selected and administered based on the patient’s symptoms, around 85% were free from eczema symptoms. A further 10% were very much improved.

In all areas, while more work is required, these research results offer promising results and suggest that, as an eczema sufferer, it’s time to consider using Chinese treatments and healing herbs.
